Outside Shooting Lifts Cowboys over Rangers

Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M.- After dominating in the paint against Chadron last night, the Cowboys used the three point shot to win an intense battle against Regis 89-78.  Kendrick Nichols and Jonathon Mines combined for 14 made 3-point shots. Assisting them was Marlon Johnson who had another double-double for the third consecutive game.

The game started off tight as the Rangers had an 8-6 lead with 16:31 on the clock. After a three pointer by Nichols, the Cowboys would tie the game at 11-11. Nichols shot would start a dominating run that consisted of 4 three-pointers and two dunks.

Despite their dominant play, the Rangers would stay close, as the Cowboys would be up 29-21 with 7:22 left. Cowboys would then go on a 10-3 run to build a 15 point lead. Questionable calls would help the Rangers have some opportunities and they would use it to only be down 46-40 to the Cowboys.

Mines would be fouled at the end of the half after a three point shot, and would make all three to send the Cowboys into the half with a nine point lead.

After a slow start to the second half, Kaylen Shane would dunk to start an 8-3 run. With 14:44 left in the game, the Cowboys would be up 62-48.

The Rangers would go on to make three consecutive three pointers to cut the deficit to five. The Rangers would have opportunities to bring the game closer but failed shots by both teams helped the Cowboys maintain their lead.

With 6:48 on the clock, a 3 pointer by Mines would help the Cowboys gain momentum. A monster dunk by Ron Lawton would spark the Cowboys into creating separation from the Rangers. They would go on to have an 87-72 lead with 1:42 in the game.

The Rangers would begin to foul but the lead was too much. The Cowboys would go on to win their ninth game in conference and their third consecutive game.

The Cowboys will be on the road next week at Adams State and Fort Lewis. The match-up with Fort Lewis could be a deciding factor in the standings as the Skyhawks are currently second in the RMAC standings.
