Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Volleyball team fell just short of beating the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners, losing 3-2. This brings the Cowgirls overall record to 5-9, and 2-7 in RMAC.
Â
First Set: The Cowgirls came out of the gates fast as they led the Roadrunners 8-6 at the beginning of the set. The Roadrunners came back to take the lead 14-12 but the Cowgirls were not going to back down as they then tied it 15-15. The set was back and forth, and the Cowgirls found themselves in good position to win the set up 23-22. They finished their strong start as they won the set 25-22 behind Senior
Caroline Hansen's strong play.
Â
Second Set: The second set opened up much like the first. Both teams came out fighting as the set was tied 3-3. The Cowgirls then opened their lead up 16-10. They were on the brink of going up 2-0, but the Roadrunners weren't going anyway. Freshman
Brianna Montano continued her stellar play as she helped seal the set for the Cowgirls, 25-20.
Â
Third Set: Looking to avoid the sweep, the Roadrunners jumped out to a 7-3 lead. After racking up 2 aces in the first 2 set, Hansen again served an ace to bring the Cowgirls within striking distance. However, the Roadrunners ran away from the Cowgirls and extended the lead to 23-14. They would go on to force a fourth set, winning the set 25-18, but the Cowgirls ended the set with some momentum.
Â
Fourth Set: The Cowgirls opened the fourth set looking to put the Roadrunners away. Neither team wanted to go down, as the score was brought to a 7-7 tie. The Cowgirls called a timeout to gather themselves as they trailed 13-16. Trailing 18-23 the Cowgirls needed a strong push to put the Roadrunners away, but they were unable to complete the comeback as they dropped the set 25-20 leading to a crucial fifth set.
Â
Fifth Set: The Cowgirls did not want to let this opportunity slip through their fingers, as they hopped out to a 3-2 lead. However, this did not last long as the Roadrunners pulled ahead 12-7. The Cowgirls could not complete the upset as they dropped the fifth set 15-8. The Roadrunners rallied to win three straight sets and avoid their first RMAC loss. They walked out with a 3-2 win.
