Cowgirls Fall to Mountain Lions

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Volleyball team lost to the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs 3-1, bringing their overall record to 5-10, and 2-8 RMAC.

First Set: The Cowgirls have been good volleyball, and they continued that at the start of the first set as they came out leading 9-7. Senior Jasmine Dixon and Senior Caroline Hansen both had a great 1st set. They kept the Cowgirls ahead for most of the set until the Mountain Lions grabbed a small 3 point lead. The Cowgirls were not down for long, as they rallied and took the first set 27-25. Dixon ended the set with 5 kills and 2 blocks.

Second Set: The 2nd set had a competitive start. Both teams traded point for point resulting in an early 8-8 tie. After that point, the Mountain Lions held a small lead through most of the 2nd set. They extended their lead to 18-12 forcing the Cowgirls to call a time out. This proved to be a deficit that the Cowgirls could not overcome as they dropped the set 25-18. Junior Shayli Schulz was having a solid night as she entered the 3rd set with 25 assists, 4 digs and 4 blocks.

Third Set: The Mountain Lions rode the momentum they created in the 2nd set and jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third set. They extended their lead to 11-4 causing another Highlands time out.  The Cowgirls could not bring themselves to threaten the Mountain Lions lead, as they took the set by the score of 25-19. The Cowgirls dug a hole early and could not pull themselves out of it.

Fourth Set: The Mountain Lions started fast once again running the score 4-0. Facing a loss, the Cowgirls fought to bring the score to 15-12, forcing a Mountain Lion time out. They failed to close the gap anymore however, as the Mountain Lions won the set 25-17. They won the match 3-1. Dixon and Montano had a strong showing for the Cowgirls, but it was not enough to overcome the Mountain Lions.

The Cowgirls will welcome the Chadron State College Eagles to  Las Vegas, NM on October 21st at 4:00 p.m. in the John A. Wilson Complex
