Cowgirls Fall to the Eagles in 4th set

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands Women's volleyball team fell to the Chadron State College Eagles, 3-1. This puts the Cowgirls at a 5-11 overall record, and a 2-9 RMAC record.

First Set: The Eagles jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but the Cowgirls answered with a run of their own, tying the set at 6-6. The first set was tightly contested throughout as each team traded point for point. The Eagles pulled away slightly as they went up 22-18, but Freshmen Brianna Montano and Junior Marissa Hoffman scored back to back points, forcing the Eagles to take a time with the score at 22-20. The Eagles came out of their timeout and closed the set, 25-22.

Second Set:The Cowgirls came out of the gates racing as they got out to a 7-2 lead. The Eagles slowly gained momentum only to be shut down again as they trailed 10-17 before taking a timeout. The Eagles put a couple of strong runs together and came back to tie the set at 25-25. The Cowgirls finally shook the Eagles and took the set 28-26 by way of a Chadron State attack error.

Third Set: Senior Jasmine Dixon scored the first point of the set for the Cowgirls, but it would be the Eagles that opened up a 9-4 lead, forcing a Highlands timeout. This timeout proved to be beneficial as a Montano kill brought the Cowgirls within striking distance as they trailed 10-9. They Eagles held a steady lead for much of the set, but the Cowgirls were not about to quit. They fought back to take a 20-19 lead. However, the Eagles closed the set on a strong note and took the set 25-22.

Fourth Set: The Cowgirls sprinted out to a 6-1 lead to start the match. The Eagles fought back to close the gap 9-10. Freshmen Celina Naranjo got the Cowgirls started again with her third ace of the night. With the score at 17-11, the Eagles made a strong push and came to tie the set at 20-20. The Eagles had momentum at their backs as they finally grabbed a 23-21 lead. Junior Shayli Schulz would bring the match within one point, but the Eagles closed strong and won the set 25-23. Hoffman had a strong showing as she was second on the team with 13 kills, trailing only Montano, who picked up 16 kills.
