Grand Junction, CO- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Volleyball team lost to the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks in 3 sets. This brings the Cowgirls overall record to 5-8 overall and 2-6 in RMAC.
First Set: The Cowgirls came out sluggish in the first set. They allowed the Mavericks to get out to a 11-5 lead before taking an early timeout. This timeout proved to be effective, as the Cowgirls came back to grab the lead, 16-14, forcing the Mavericks to take a timeout of their own. Colorado Mesa had their backs against the wall, but they closed strong and won the set 25-21. Junior Marissa Hoffman had a strong start as she collected 5 kills during the 1st set.
Second Set: The Mavericks picked up right where they left off and hopped out to a 8-3 lead causing a Highlands timeout. The Mavericks continued to extend the lead in the second, running the score to 17-9 forcing another NMHU timeout. Junior Shayli Schulz already picked up her 7th dig and 16th assist, but it was not enough to hold off the Mavericks as they won the set, 25-15.
Third Set: Fighting to keep the match alive, the Cowgirls came out trading point for point with the Mavericks, leading them 5-4 at one point. This did not last long though, and they gave up the lead and called another timeout, down 10-14. The Cowgirls were facing a 13-20 deficit, and the Mavericks were looking to close them out. It would be the Mavericks that accomplished what they set out to do. They closed out the Cowgirls 25-15 to complete the sweep. Senior Caroline Hansen finished second on the team with 8 kills.
The Cowgirls will head back home on October 14th to take on Metropolitan State University of Denver at 7:00 p.m.
Go Cowgirls!!!
