Cowgirls Take Down Griffins

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Volleyball team snapped their 11 match losing streak as they beat the Westminster Griffins, 3-1. Your Cowgirls improve their record to 6-15 overall, and 3-13 in RMAC play.
 
First Set: The The first set was tightly contested. Both teams were battling as neither team could secure a lead until the Cowgirls got ahead 9-5. The Griffins stopped the play with a timeout, trailing 7-12. The Cowgirls could not hold onto this lead however, as they Griffins made a strong push to secure the lead at 18-17. Senior Jasmine Dixon and the Cowgirls quickly regained the lead, but stumbled at the end and could not recover as they lost the set 22-25.
 
Second Set: The second set started out competitive as well as neither team coulud gain breathing room until the Cowgirls claimed a 14-11 lead. Senior Caroline Hansen helped lead the Cowgirls to a 21-16 advantage. They would not surrender this lead as they would take the set 25-18.
 
Third Set: The Griffins came out and grabbed a quick 7-5 lead, forcing a timeout by the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls just would not back down as they matched point for point bringing the score was tied at 16-16.  They had a quick scare as Westminster brought the score to 19-20, forcing a timeout. This timeout catapulted the Cowgirls to take the set at 25-21.Dixon continued to have a great night as she finished with 18 kills through the first 3 sets.
 
Fourth Set: The teams came out battling hard once again, but it was the Griffins who came out to take a 7-4 before Highlands burned a timeout to gather themselves. This was beneficial as they came back to claim a 9-8 lead. Not wanting them to get away, the Griffins called a quick timeout trailing, 15-17. The Cowgirls extended their lead to 23-18 before Westminster made a push to bring the score to 21-23. However, the Griffins could not overcome the deficit and the Cowgirls closed the set strong as they won 25-22. This secured the match win for them. Junior Shayli Schulz was a big contributor tonight as she finished with 7 kills and 43 assists.
 
Final Score: Cowgirls-3 Griffins-1
 
The Cowgirls will be back in action on November 8th at 7:00 p.m. against the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers.
