Mountain Lions Too Much For the Cowgirls

Colorado Springs, CO- New Mexico Highlands University Women's Volleyball team came up short against the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs (3-2) in tonight's (Sept 30th) away game. Your Cowgirls drop to 5-5 overall and 2-3 RMAC.

1st Set: The Cowgirls raced out to 7-3 lead, causing the Mountain lions to take an early timeout. They continued this attack as they went up 13-4 by way of a sophomore Bryanna Lopez service ace, forcing the Mountain lions to take yet another timeout. The Cowgirls lead was never truly threatened as a block by Senior Jasmine Dixon won the first set for NMHU 25-18.

2nd Set: The Mountain lions started out the 2nd set fast, and took their first lead of the match 2-1. They opened up the lead 11-6, but the Cowgirls kept battling. The set was back and forth with no team taking a strong grip on the score board until the Mountain lions pulled ahead 22-12. The Cowgirls made a strong push however, they came up short in the set 18-25.

3rd Set: The 3rd set got out to a neck and neck battle. The score was tied 5-5, and junior Taylor Hamilton brought the lead out to 5-7 in favor of the Mountain lions. Not wanting the set to get away from them, the Cowgirls quickly called a timeout. The Mountain lions went on to score 6 unanswered points to bring the score to 8-16 before junior Marissa Hoffman came up with a kill. UCCS took control of the set, 25-12.

4th Set: The Mountain lions carried the momentum from the 3rd set to the 4th, going up 4-0 causing NMHU to call a timeout. Senior Caroline Hansen put the streak to rest as she got a kill, making it 1-6. This got the Cowgirls going as they closed the gap 12-14. Junior Shayli Schulz earned her 34th assist of the game as freshmen Brianna Montano brought the game within one point (18-19). Montano then tied the set 24-24. The Cowgirls had no quit in them as they came back to win the set 26-25.

5th Set: The start of the 5th was back and forth like most of the match, but the Mountain lions took the lead 8-3. This proved to be a deficit that the Cowgirls could not overcome. Despite their best efforts they fell short in the 5th set 4-15. Hansen turned in a solid performance getting 12 kills and 12 digs. Lopez left it all on the court as she turned in a 26 dig night.

Final Score: 3-2 Mountain lions

The Cowgirls will continue on the road as they head to Denver to play against Metropolitan State University of Denver on October 1 at 5 pm.
