New Mexico Highlands Women's Soccer tied the home opener with Midwestern State University in today's game (Sept. 5) at Perkin Stadium. The Cowgirls advanced to 0-1-1 overall and 0-0 RMAC after today's game.
1st Half
Within 18 minutes of the game, the Cowgirls had a chance to score with a header by Senior Ashley Simons that went wide right. Cowgirls had five chances to score but Midwestern Goalie Courtney Burnette was there to save her team.
2nd Half
The Mustangs came out firing away with a total of nine shots and three of them were on goal. Freshman Makenna Luster had three of her eight saves in the second half. The Cowgirls had a hard time with the Mustangs defensive and only had two shots on goal. Both teams could not find a way to get the ball passed the goalie line. Ending the 90 minutes 0-0, the game went into over-time.
1st OT
Both teams had an extra ten minutes to take home the win. With eight minutes left of the ten minute over-time the game came to a stall because of weather conditions. 45 minutes later, the storm went away and the game continued. The Mustangs came out ready to play and within two minutes got a shot on goal, but Highland's Makenna Luster was ready and got the save. The Cowgirl's offense struggled to get the ball passed Midwestern defensive. After the time ran out, the game went into a second over-time.
2nd OT
The game went into it's last ten minutes of play and Freshman Madison Cataldo found herself with a shot on goal, but the Mustang's goalie got her hands on the ball for her fifth save of the game. Luster also helped the Cowgirls out as the time ran out with two saves that stopped the Mustangs from taking the win home. Unfortunately, the clock ran down to zero and with a total of 110 minutes of play the game ended in a tie.
