Cowboys Fall to Buffs

Las Vegas,NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team fell in their opener to the West Texas A&M Buffs, 1-9. The Cowboys will start the season at 0-1 overall.
 
The Cowboys only allowed 1 hit in the first inning, but Senior Cody Lawson picked him off at second base to retire the side. Junior Codie Simmons was able to get on base by way of a walk, but the Buffs ended the inning with a strikeout.
 
 The third inning got off to a shaky start for the Cowboys as the Buffs quickly loaded the bases with only one out. They got two runs, one by way of a walk, and the other by way of a single. The Buffs added a devastating blow to the Cowboys as they hit a Grand Slam Homerun.
 
After giving up two straight singles in the fourth, Lawson was pulled for Junior Kyle Bedsole. The Buffs got two more across before the end of the inning due to errors.
 
Bedsole held the Buffs quiet until the sixth inning, when they scored off of a sacrifice fly. He was able to get the Cowboys out of the inning without any more damage done.
 
Senior Pitcher Corey Nelson made quick work of the Buffs in the eighth as they went down, 1-2-3. The Cowboys were also able to get their bats going in the bottom of the eighth as Sophomore Travis Spruiell reeled off a double to get them started. Spruiell was able to reach home base before the end of the inning to bring the score to 1-9.
 
Final Score: Cowboys-1 Buffs-9
 
The Cowboys will pick up the action again on February 4th at 2 p.m. in the second game of their series.
