Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team fell in their final game against the West Texas A&M Buffs, 5-9. Your Cowboys start off the season at 0-3 overall.
Senior Phil Trujillo started the day for the Cowboys on the mound. They got out to a tough start as the Buffs pushed two runs across, but Trujillo responded by striking out one batter, forcing a fly out, and catching a base runner stealing. Senior Jeremy McCarty gave his team a huge boost as he crushed a ball for a 2 run home run. He picked up the RBI by allowing Junior Frankie Silva to score.
After being outscored 2-0 in the second inning, the Cowboys came on strong. Trujillo sat down three Buffs batters in a row to quickly retire the side. Then, Silva picked up an RBI of his own off of a double, which allowed Junior Cody Simmons to score. McCarty was not done yet however, as he sent another ball over the fence for his second homer of the day, good for 2 runs. This would give the Cowboys the 5-4 lead entering the fourth.
Trujillo continued to shut down the Buffs batters, as the only base runner of the fourth inning reached on an error. The Cowboys looked to have had something brewing as they had the bases loaded, but two straight strikeouts would leave 3 runners stranded.
The Buffs tied the game up at 5-5 in the top of the fifth, and the Cowboys could not respond as they were unable to get anyone on base.
The Cowboys struggled to find much more as they were outscored, 4-0 in the final five innings.
Final Score: Cowboys-5 Buffs-9
The Cowboys will take the field again on February 10th at Fort Hays State University.
