Cowboys Take a Win Home

Denver, Co- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team outlasted the Metropolitan State University-Denver Roadrunners. Your Cowboys now carry a 7-12 overall record and a 3-5 RMAC record.

Sophomore Joseph Cilladi got on base first for the Cowboys with a single, then used crafty base running to get to third. Junior James Cordova singled to center field to bring Cilladi home for the first run of the game. Senior pitcher Max Siedlecki started the game for the Cowboys as he retired the side in order.

Junior Luis Ornelas led off the top of the second with a single. Sophomore Travis Spruiell walked giving the Cowboys two runners on base with no outs. Then, Junior Codie Simmons came up to the plate and smacked a two RBI double, bringing home Orenlas and Spruiell. Siedlecki made quick work of the Roadrunners, taking a 3-0 lead into the third inning.

Cordova hit his second double of the day to get on base in the top of the third. Then, Ornelas slapped a single to center field that allowed Cordova to find home plate, giving his team the 4-0 lead. The Roadrunners countered this with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning.

Senior Jeremy McCarty was hit by a pitch to start the fifth inning. Junior Eduardo Perez smacked a double to left field, giving McCarty enough time to score. Ornelas came up and tapped a single, which was enough to get Perez home for their second run of the inning. Siedlecki continued to pitch well as he only allowed one hit in the bottom of the inning.

The Roadrunners found a rhythm and reeled off seven runs in three innings to make the score 6-8 in their favor.

Cilladi chose his pitches well in the top of the ninth as he got on base with a walk. Later, Cordova would hit the single to bring Cilladi home making the score 7-8. Ornelas came up with a huge triple for the Cowboys that scored McCarty and Cordova, giving his team the lead once again at 9-8. Spruiell ended the rally with a single that brought Ornelas home. Senior pitcher Dylan Norris and Graduate Student Avery Brandon combined to close out the game for the Cowboys without giving up another run.
