Cowboys Split Series With Rangers

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team concluded their series against the Regis University Rangers today as they fell, 6-9.
 
Senior Phil Trujillo got the start at pitcher today for the Cowboys. The Rangers snuck a run across in the top of the first off of a wild pitch. Senior Easton Garcia was the first Cowboy to reach base as he hit a single, but he would be left stranded.
 
The Trujillo and the Cowboys field had a tough time in the top of the fourth inning as they allowed 5 runs. The Rangers also scored 1 more run in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Junior Luis Ornelas got the Cowboys going with a double to lead off. Junior James Cordova would bring Ornelas home with his next at bat as he singled to right field.
 
Senior Cory Nelson took over the mound for Trujillo at the start of the fifth inning. Norris got out to a great start as he retired the Rangers in order. Sophomore Travis Spruiell led off the bottom of the inning with a single to center. Junior Codie Simmons was up next and he picked up the RBI as he hit a single, allowing Spruiell to get home. A little later, Senior Brad Blackwell also hit a single that scored Simmons to make the score 3-7.
 
Nelson  continued to hold his own in the top of the sixth as he gave up two hits, but didn't allow a run. Cordova opened up the bottom of the inning with a monster solo home run to narrow the gap even more. Spruiell got on base with another single, and was brought home shortly after by Simmons. Garcia bunted, found his way on base, and also picked up the RBI with Sophmore Joseph Cilladi finding the plate. The Cowboys had brought the score to 6-7 with three innings left.
 
The Rangers scored twice more in the top of the eighth, making the score 9-6in their favor.
 
The Cowboys fought hard, but came up just short in their comeback bid as they fell, 6-9.
 
The Cowboys will hit the road next as they take on the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on March 31st.
