Cowboys Split Double-Header Against Orediggers

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team took on the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers today in a double header.
 
Colorado School of Mines Orediggers Game 1
Junior Dakota Pacheco started on the mound for the Cowboys, giving up only one hit in the top of the first. Senior Easton Garcia got his team started with a single. Senior Brad Blackwell followed him as he also hit a single. Junior Luis Ornelas hit the single to break the ice and allow Garcia to score. Senior Jeremy McCarty got in on the rally too, hitting the single that scored Blackwell. The Cowboys exploded for 12 runs off of 10 hits in the bottom of the first inning.
 
The Orediggers scored their first run in the top of the third inning, but Pacheco would keep them in check after this. Ornelas started off the bottom of the inning with a single. McCarty stepped up and hit a double that advanced Orenlas to second. Junior Eduardo Perez flew out in his at bat, but he allowed Ornelas to find home plate and add to their lead. Junior James Cordova hit the single that scored McCarty, then Junior Preston Inman hit a double that repaid McCarty as he scored. Inman would score of a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 16-1, Cowboys.
 
The Orediggers would make a run in the last four innings, but the Cowboys held off the rally as they secured the 16-10 victory in the first of two games.
 
Colorado School of Mines Orediggers Game 2
Senior pitcher Cody Lawson got the nod to start in the second game. He gave up three runs on two hits. Garcia found himself on base with a single. Orenlas would get on base as he was hit with a pitch, but the Cowboys couldn't get much done as they left them stranded.
 
Lawson sat the Orediggers batters down in order to open the second inning. Cordova came up big for the Cowboys as he knocked a solo homer out of the park.
 
Lawson got in trouble in the third, but he got out of the inning with no damage done. McCarty hit the second homer of the game for the Cowboys, this time, bringing Orenlas home with him.
 
Garcia slapped a single up the middle allowing Senior Brian Chaparro to score. Ornelas flew out, but in doing so he got Junior Codie Simmons cross home plate. McCarty hit a single to bring Garcia home, then Perez hit the single to get Blackwell home, bringing the score to 7-3, Cowboys.
 
Junior Brett Martin came on in relief for Lawson in the top of the fifth. The Orediggers were able to push three more runs across before Martin could get out of the inning.
 
Senior Max Siedlecki relieved Martin in the top of the sixth inning. They would score the go ahead run before Siedlecki could get out of the inning. The Cowboys could not get much going in the bottom of the inning. McCarty singled with two outs, but the Cowboys would leave him stranded as they fell in their second game, 7-8.
 
The Cowboys will complete their series with the Orediggers tomorrow, March 5th, at 12:00 p.m.
