The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team will take place in a doubleheader today against the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.

Colorado Mesa University Mavericks Game 1
Senior
Easton Garcia got off to a good start as he led off with a single, but he would be the only Cowboy to get on. He would be retired later on a fielder's choice. Senior
Cody Lawson started the day on the mound, and got out to a solid start as he sat the Mavericks down in order in the bottom of the first.

The Mavericks would score first as they pushed a run across early in the bottom of the second inning to take the 1-0 lead.

The Cowboys could not seem to get much going behind the bats, but Lawson was battling on the mound. He retired the Mavericks in order once again in the bottom of the fourth, keeping the score at 1-0.

Sophomore
Joseph Cilladi got on base with a walk in the top of the sixth, but he would be left stranded. The Mavericks were able to squeak out another run in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-0 lead heading into the final inning.

The Cowboys could not find a way to score as they fell in the first game of the day, 0-2.

Colorado Mesa University Mavericks Game 2
The Cowboys had a tough time out of the gates as they could not muster up a hit in the top of the first. Senior pitcher
Dylan Norris started the second game on the mound for his team. The Mavericks hit two homers off of Norris to command a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

McCarty got on base in the top of the second with a walk. Junior
Eduardo Perez crushed a triple and picked up the RBI as McCarty came home to make the score 1-4. Norris kept the Mavericks off of the board in the bottom of the inning.

The Mavericks continued to score as they earned 2 more runs in the bottom of the third inning, making the score 1-6 after three.

Simmons was the first Cowboy to get on base in the top of the fifth as he hit a double to center. Garcia also got on base with a walk, but both of them would be stranded. Graduate Student
Avery Brandon sat the Mavericks down in order in the bottom of the fifth.

McCarty hit a single in the top of the sixth to get on base. Junior
James Cordova also singled, putting two runners on with one out. Junior
Danny O'Keefe pinch hit for Spruiell and did a good job as he smacked a two RBI double that scored McCarty and Cordova. The Mavericks smacked a 3 run home run in the bottom of the inning however, to take the 10-3 lead.

Preston Inman got the Cowboys on base with a single in the top of the seventh with two outs. Then, Ornelas got on base with a walk, putting two runners on. McCarty followed Ornleas with a walk of his own, loading the bases with two outs. Cordova stepped up to the plate and slapped a two RBI double, scoring Inman and Ornelas. Senior
Brian Chaparro was wise with his pitches as he earned a walk, automatically scoring McCarty to bring the score to 6-10. The Cowboys received some help from the Mavericks as they threw a wild ball, allowing Cordova to score. Finally, Cilladi capped off the Cowboys rally with a huge 3 RBI triple that scored Simmons, Chaparro, and Perez to knot up the game at 10-10 heading into the bottom of the inning. Sophomore pitcher
Joshua Baca took over in the bottom of the inning and kept the Cowboys alive for one more inning.

The Cowboys failed to find a base in the top of the eighth, and the Mavericks took advantage of this as they scored the game winning run in the bottom of the inning.

The Cowboys would fall just short in extra innings, 10-11.

The Cowboys will wrap up their series with the Mavericks tomorrow, April 2
nd, at 12:00 p.m.
