Cowboys Fall to #21 Mavericks in Series

Grand Junction, CO- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team concluded their series with the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks today as they fell 1-8.
 
Senior Easton Garcia got the Cowboys rolling in the top of the first as he hit a single. Senior Jeremy McCarty also got on base with a single, but neither could find their way home. Senior pitcher Phil Trujillo started the day on the mound. The Mavericks got away with one run in the bottom of the inning.
 
Junior Danny O'Keefe opened up the top of the third inning with some wise pitch seletion as he earned a walk. Junior James Cordova also worked the count and earned a walk. Senior Brian Chaparro singled up the middle of the field, giving O'Keefe the green light to knot the game up at 1-1. Trujillo pitched a solid inning as he kept the Mavericks off of the bases.
 
Junior Codie Simmons was the lone Cowboy to garner up a hit in the top of the fourth. The Mavericks capitalized off of this and scored one more run in the bottom of the inning to break the tie.
 
The Mavericks turned it up a notch in the bottom of the fifth as they rallied for 5 runs off of 5 hits, making the score 1-7.
 
The Cowboys had two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning as O'Keefe got on with a double and Junior Luis Ornelas earned a walk, but they could not bring them home. Mesa pushed one more run across in the bottome of the inning to extend their lead a bit more.
 
The Cowboys would go on to fall in the series finale, 1-8.
 
The Cowboys will make a quick trip home as they take on the University of the Southwest Mustangs on April 4th.
