Cowboys Fall Short To Mountain Lions in Day One

Colorado Springs, CO- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team fell to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions by a score of, 3-5.
 
The Cowboys came out of the gates a little slow as they were retired in order. However, Junior pitcher Dakota Pacheco got out to great start and sat the Mountain Lions down in order as well.
 
Senior Jeremy McCarty led off the top of the second with a double get a runner into scoring position with no outs. Junior James Cordova also picked up a hit as he singled with his first at bat. McCarty was able to score off of a passed ball, breaking the ice and giving his team the 1-0 lead.
 
The pitching battle continued as neither team could score until the top of the fifth. Junior Codie Simmons led off the top of the inning and got on base as he was hit with a pitch. Senior Easton Garcia smacked a double down the right field line that allowed Cordova to pick up the second run of the day for the Cowboys. The Mountain Lions got going in the bottom of the inning as they scored 4 runs off of 5 hits, including a two run homer.
 
McCarty led off the top of the sixth with a single, and Sophomore Travis Spruiell got on base as he was hit by a pitch, but both would be left stranded. The Mountain Lions were able to score one more run in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 5-2.
 
Sophomore Joseph Cilladi led off the top of the eighth with a nice single to right field. Soon after, McCarty would hit the single that would score Cilladi to narrow the deficit to 5-3.
 
The Cowboys did their best to rally from behind as they had two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but they could not capitalize as they ultimately fell, 5-3.
 
The Cowboys continue their series with the Mountain Lions tomorrow April 14th at 12:00 p.m.
