Colorado Springs, CO- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team took on the Mountain Lions today in a doubleheader.

University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Game 1
Senior
Easton Garcia led off the game with a single, but he would be called out on a double play shortly after. Senior pitcher
Cody Lawson started the game for the Cowboys. The Mountain Lions would go on to score first, taking the 1-0 lead after the first inning.

The Cowboys struggled to get on base in the top of the second. Junior
Danny O'Keefe found himself on base with a walk, but he would be left stranded. The Mountain Lions pushed another run across in the bottom of the inning, but Lawson got out of the inning before more damage could be done.

James Cordova led off the top of the fifth with a double. Sophomore
Travis Spruiell would also get on base with a single, but a double play would end the inning before they could get a run to cross. Lawson would respond with solid work in the bottom of the inning as he sat the Mountain Lions down in order.

Senior
Jeremy McCarty reached base in the top of the seventh with a single. Cordova would follow him as he also nailed a single to put two runners on base with one out. Junior
Codie Simmons came up with a big time single as McCarty scored for the Cowboys first run of the day. On the next at bat, Cordova would score on a wild pitch to knot the game up at 2-2. Pitcher
Avery Brandon came in as relief for Lawson in the bottom of the inning. The Mountain Lions were able to score the walk off run with a single.

The Mountain Lions would go on to win the first game of the day, 3-2.

University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Game 2
McCarty earned the first hit of the game as he doubled to left. Then, Cordova came up and blasted a two run homer to take the early 2-0 lead. Senior pitcher
Dylan Norris started the game on the mound and got out to a solid start as he kept the Mountain Lions off of the score board.

Luis Ornelas got hit by a pitch at the start of the second inning. Senior
Brad Blackwell hit a single that pushed Ornelas to third base, but they would not be brought home before the side was retired. The Mountain Lions would rally for 5 runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 5-2 lead after two innings.

Senior
Emilio Medina would get on base in the top of the fourth with a double. Garcia would come up with the single that would score Medina, narrowing the deficit to 5-3. Senior pitcher
Max Siedlecki would only give up one hit in the bottom of the inning.

Cordova earned his way onto base with a walk in the top of the fifth. Ornelas singled to left field, bringing Cordova home to chip away at the lead even more. Siedlecki wouldn't allow a hit in the bottom of the inning.

Blackwell singled to right field to lead off the top of the sixth. Awhile later, Blackwell would find his way home on a wild pitch to knot the game up at 5-5. Senior pitcher
Corey Nelson would come on in relief for Siedlecki in the bottom of the inning, and the two would combine to keep the Mountain Lions tame.

The Cowboys could not get on base in the top of the seventh, and the Mountain Lions capitalized in the bottom of the inning as they got the game winning run across with a throwing error.

The Cowboys would fall in the second game of the day, 6-5.

The Cowboys will conclude their series with the Mountain Lions tomorrow April 15
th at 12:00 p.m.
