Cowgirls look to build momentum this weekend at home

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team looks to build off Sunday's wild come-from-behind victory at Black Hills State as it hosts a key weekend against a pair RMAC foes in Colorado Mesa and Western State Colorado as the Cowgirls look to get back into the RMAC Tournament chase.

THE COWGIRLS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND (1-9, 1-6) | SEASON STATS

The Cowgirls picked up their first win of the season Sunday as they rallied from a 3-0 halftime deficit to beat BHSU 5-4 in overtime - including a game-tying goal from Anna Medina in the 90th minute to send the game to overtime. Alondra Gildo-Ceballos had a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime in the 96th minute. The Cowgirls also got goals from Nitza Rodriguez and Breanna Fatten while getting assists from Tania Salcedo and Monique Nevarez.

Rodriguez leads the team with three goals this season while Gildo-Ceballos and Fatten have two goals apiece. Salcedo and Monique Nevarez lead the team with two assists apiece.

Briana Ruelas (3.57 GAA, 605 minutes) and Karina Vega (2.69 goals against average, 301 minutes) split time at keeper in the win against BHSU.

ABOUT COLORADO MESA (4-5-2, 2-4-1) | SEASON STATS

The Mavericks broke a five-game winless streak last Sunday (0-4-1) at home against Western State Colorado with a 1-0 victory. Prior to that, CMU tied with Black Hills State and had lost to No. 7 Colorado School of Mines (1-0), MSU Denver (2-0), UC Colorado Springs (5-0) and Regis (2-0). CMU opened RMAC play with a 1-0 win at home against Colorado Christian.

The Mavericks have four players with a team-high two goals apiece this season in Alexis Allard, Ryanne Parker, Zoe Peterson and Lexi Newton while three players have a team-best two assists in Allard, Mackenzie King and Taylor Jones. CMU has had three keepers this season play more than 250 minutes and none more that 370 in Emily Signorio (360 minutes, 0.75 GAA), Kamrie Gunderson (296 minutes, 1.21 GAA) and Janelle Richmond-Buccola (270 minutes, 2.0 GAA).

ABOUT WESTERN STATE COLORADO (2-9, 2-5) | SEASON STATS

The Mountaineers have dropped two games in a row since beating BHSU 3-1 on Sept. 28, a 2-0 loss to Regis on Sept. 30 and a 1-0 loss on the road to CMU on Sunday. WSC's other victory this season came at home against Colorado Christian on Sept. 16.


Alex Mason leads the team in scoring with two goals while five other players have one goal apiece. Megan Wheelock and Katie Desch have the Mountaineers' two assists this season. Emilie Eckhart has played the majority of the season at keeper for WSC with a 1.76 GAA and 69 saves in 973 minutes.
