LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team fought back after dropping the first two games and snagged the third game from Dixie State, but fell in four 3-1 (25-10, 25-9, 18-25, 25-12) to the Trailblazers Saturday night at Wilson Complex.
NMHU (7-16, 5-10) after falling in the first two games to Dixie State (18-4, 13-2) jumped out to an 8-4 lead after a
Samantha Sjogren kill. The lead expanded to 17-10 after a kill and an ace by Matchett, an attack error by the Trailblazers and a kill from
Camryn Nelson. Dixie State wouldn't get within four the rest of the way as kills by Ferrari and Matchett capped off the game at 25-18.
But Dixie State came back firing in the fourth game – turning a 6-4 early lead into a 13-5 advantage and cruising to the victory to clinch the match.
Cynthia Norris led the Cowgirls with 11 kills while Matchett had seven and
Julie Staffler finished with six.
Celina Naranjo had a team-high 11 assists while Sjogren added 11 (she also had a team-best three kills).
Trinity Saiz led the team with eight digs.
The Cowgirls host Adams State 7 p.m. Friday and Fort Lewis 6 p.m. Saturday next weekend at Wilson Complex.
