RMAC play begins on the road for Cowgirl soccer

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands University women's soccer team opens RMAC play on the road this week as the Cowgirls travel to take on No. 11 Metropolitan State University Denver 7 p.m. Friday and defending RMAC Tourney champs University of Colorado Colorado Springs 1 p.m. Sunday.

LAST WEEK FOR THE COWGIRLS (0-3) | SEASON STATS

The Cowgirls had their game against Eastern New Mexico canceled Wednesday then lost to University of Texas of the Permian Basin 1-0 at home Sunday. In the loss, NMHU outshot UTPB 12-7 (including 5-2 on shots on goal) but couldn't find the back of the net. Also, the Cowgirls were aggressive - but couldn't time their attack right as they were called for nine offsides compared to none for the Falcons.

ABOUT MSU DENVER (2-1-1) | SEASON STATS

The Roadrunners after winning their first two matches on the season convincingly (6-0 at Texas A&M - Commerce and 3-1 at home over Dallas Baptist) tied with Central Washington 1-1 on Sept. 6 and lost 2-1 at No. 9 Western Washington. Reigna Banks has paced MSU Denver with five goals while Gabriella Gamboa has three goals and two assists early in the season. Erica Torres is the Roadrunners' keeper and has a 0.95 goals allowed average and a save percentage of 0.875. MSU Denver was picked to finish fourth in the RMAC preseason poll.

ABOUT UCCS (2-1-1) | SEASON STATS

The Mountain Lions have won two of their last three with victories over Fort Hays (3-1) on Friday and Lubbock Christian (2-1) on Sept. 1 with a loss to West Texas A&M (2-1) on Sept. 3 wedged between. They opened the season with a tie at home against Dallas Baptist. Tarah Patterson and Tori Maydrew lead UCCS in scoring at two goals apiece. Kaylyn Smith has a goals against average of 0.95 and  save percentage of 0.692. UCCS, which began the season ranked No. 3 in the country but is now unranked, was picked as the favorite in the RMAC in the preseason poll. The Mountain Lions won the RMAC Tournament and made a run to the NCAA Final Four last season.
