Cowgirls fall to UTPB 1-0 in final non-conference contest

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team fell to University of Texas of the Permian Basin 1-0 on a goal in the final 10 minutes on Sunday afternoon at Sanchez Family Stadium.

The Cowgirls (0-3) had their chances, outshooting the Falcons (1-3) 12-7 – including 5-2 on shots on goal, but couldn't connect.

A foul on NMHU in the 82nd minute set up a free kick for UTPB where Kalia Beckwith put a ball from 35 yards out in front of the goal that bounced around before Ariel Roybal snuck it in the bottom right of the goal to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage.

The Cowgirls continued to press and Anna Medina took a shot with two seconds left that was saved by UTPB to secure the Falcon win.

The Cowgirls were aggressive throughout, but couldn't' time their attacks as NMHU was called for nine offsides compared to none for UTPB.

Medina led the Cowgirls with three shots (two on goal) while Nitza Rodriguez, Alondra Gildo-Ceballos and Tania Salcedo each took a pair of shots (with Rodriguez and Gildo-Ceballos each getting a shot on goal). Briana Ruelas was in goal for NMHU and made one save while allowing the one goal.

This was the Cowgirls' final non-conference contest of the season as they head into RMAC play next week – hitting the road to take on Metropolitan State University of Denver 7 p.m. Friday.
