LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- Now that's the way to snap a losing skid.
Â
After the New Mexico Highlands baseball team gave up a pair of two-run homers in the ninth inning to see an 8-6 lead turn into a 10-8 deficit and scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it,
Auggie Francis blasted a two-out, three-run, walk-off home run in extra innings to end the Cowboys' seven-game losing streak and beat Regis 13-10 Friday at Brandt Field.
Â
Momentum appeared to be in favor of the Rangers (9-21, 4-13) after the Cowboys (10-20, 3-14) saw their 8-6, ninth-inning advantage disappear and turn into a two-run deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Â
But NMHU battled back as
Garrett Hammer turned on an 0-2 pitch and launched it over the wall in right to cut the Ranger lead to 10-9 with one out in the ninth. The Cowboys were down to their final out with a runner on first after a
Kalen Hammer single before
Joe Cilladi was hit with a pitch, both advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and the Cowboys loaded the bases after
Jared Brown was intentionally walked. That's when
Kalen Hammer got a great jump toward home on a ball in the dirt and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 10-10 and send it to extra innings.
Â
Kalen Hammer tossed a scoreless 10th to give NMHU a chance to win it in the bottom half of the inning.
Justin DeHoog got the rally going with a one-out single, and after a deep fly out to left,
Kalen Hammer singled with two outs to bring up Francis.
Â
On an 0-1 pitch that was on the outer half, Francis went with the pitch and drove it over the wall in right-center field to end it and give the Cowboys a 13-10 win.
Â
Francis paced the Cowboys, going 4-for-6 with a double, home run, three RBI and four runs.
Gaylan Young had a big day as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI while
Jared Brown drove in three runs and the Hammer brothers each picked up two hits.
Kalen Hammer also picked up the win, going two innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Â
The Cowboys and Rangers play a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday before closing out the series with a single game starting at noon Sunday.
