LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- For the second time in two days, the New Mexico Highlands baseball team won on a walk-off in extra innings as a
Justin DeHoog RBI single beat Regis 7-6 in game two Saturday to split a doubleheader with Regis after dropping game one 7-5 at Brandt Field.
It was a wild second game as the Cowboys (11-21 overall, 4-15 RMAC) trailed the Rangers (10-22, 5-14) 4-3 heading into the fourth before NMHU freshman
Brandon Baier blasted his first collegiate home run to tie the game. In the next inning,
Justin DeHoog hit a solo blast to center field to give the Cowboys a 5-4 lead on the Rangers.
The score remained that way heading into the seventh and final inning before Regis hit back-to-back one-out home runs to take a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
But the Cowboys forced extra innings thanks to freshman
Kalen Hammer as he hit his first collegiate homer as well to tie the game 6-6.
The score remained that way until the ninth inning when
Auggie Francis singled to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a balk, Hammer dropped down a bunt for single to put runners on the corner,
Gaylan Young was intentionally walked to load the bases before DeHoog on a 1-0 pitch lined single to left to score Francis and win the game for the Cowboys.
Francis led the Cowboys at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, double and three runs.
Kalen Hammer went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs and DeHoog went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Carl Shonrock got the win, throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief while allowing three hits and adding a strikeout.
In the first game, NMHU jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings – which included three RBI and two doubles from
Jared Brown. But Regis scored a run in the third inning before a five-run fifth gave the Rangers the lead for good at 7-5.
Brown paced NMHU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI while Young went 2-for-4.
Kyle Bedsole got the loss, going 4.1 innings and giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Cowboys and Rangers conclude the series with a nine-inning game noon Sunday at Brandt Field.
