LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team is starting to make this walk-off-in-extra-innings thing a habit.
Â
The Cowboys entered the bottom of the ninth down two to Regis on Sunday before scoring two to force extra innings and won it in the 11th with a
Garrett Hammer sacrifice fly to beat the Rangers 10-9 at Brandt Field – the third time in the series the Cowboys won via walk-off.
Â
NMHU (12-21 overall, 5-15 RMAC) trailed Regis (10-23, 5-15) 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth before an RBI single from Hammer and a two-run single by
Auggie Francis cut the deficit to 6-5.
Â
The Cowboys took the lead the next inning as a two-run double by Hammer made it 7-6. The Rangers answered, however, as Regis scored two in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to make it 9-7.
Â
The score remained that way until the bottom of the ninth when
Justin DeHoog led off the inning for the Cowboys with a double. After a groundout moved DeHoog to third,
Cody Reilly doubled to right center to cut the Regis lead to 9-8.
Â
Reilly moved to third on a wild pitch before Hammer singled down the left field line to tie the game at 9-9.
Â
The score was still tied heading into the 11th when Reilly hit a ball to right field that looked like just a single, but the senior hustled his way into second base for a double. A wild pitch moved Reilly to third before Hammer drove a ball deep to center field for a sacrifice fly to score Reilly and give the Cowboys the victory – their third walk-off in as many days as NMHU took three of four from the Rangers.
Â
Key for the Cowboys was the relief effort from
Kyle Bedsole as the senior pitched the final four innings without giving up a run to pick up the victory – allowing just three hits while walking one.
Â
At the plate, Hammer went 4-for-5 with a double and five RBI to lead the Cowboys. Reilly went 3-for-5 with three doubles, four runs and an RBI,
Jared Brown went 3-for-6 with a double, Francis was 2-for-6 with three RBI,
Travis Spruiell went 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored and
Kalen Hammer was 2-for-5 with a run.
Â
NMHU plays a non-conference game at Brandt Field noon Tuesday against Lubbock Christian.
