ALAMOSA, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team led 8-1 after the top of the fifth before untimely errors led to nine unanswered and unearned runs by Adams State as the Cowboys fell 10-9 on Thursday at ASU Baseball Field.

The Cowboys (16-31 overall, 9-24 RMAC) scored a run in the first, a run in the third and used a grand slam by
Gaylan Young to highlight a five-run fourth to take a 7-0 lead on Adams State (9-39, 6-27) before the Grizzlies added a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-1.

NMHU got the run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from
Kalen Hammer to make it 8-1 before a pair of errors led to seven unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth for Adams State to tie the game at 8-8.

Another error by the Cowboys in the seventh inning led to two unearned runs by the Grizzlies to give ASU a 10-8 advantage. NMHU got within a run in the eighth inning after
Thomas Wisneski doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error for the Grizzlies to make it 10-9.

Travis Spruiell and Wisneski each had a pair of hits including a double for the Cowboys while Young led NMHU with five RBI.
Kyle Bedsole picked up the tough loss, going the distance while giving up 10 runs (only one earned) on 11 hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

The teams play a doubleheader noon Friday at ASU Baseball Field.
