ALAMOSA, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team had a big day at the plate and on the mound during a doubleheader sweep of Adams State, 14-2 and 17-1, on Friday at ASU Baseball Field.
In the first game the Cowboys (18-31 overall, 11-24 RMAC) got a huge game from
Auggie Francis who went 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI and three runs while
J.T. Mossberg tossed a seven-inning complete game, giving up two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Francis got the Cowboys going right away as he led the game off with a home run. Adams State (9-40, 6-29) answered with a run in the bottom of the first before a four-run third inning, a four-run fourth inning and a one-run fifth by NMHU made it 10-1.
Adams State scored a run in the fifth before the Cowboys scored four more in the sixth to make the final 14-2.
Along with Francis' big game,
Jared Brown went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs and
Justin DeHoog went 2-for-4 with a home run, double and four RBI.
Mossberg needed just 80 pitches in his seven-inning complete game as the junior has won each of his last five starts (he's now 5-2 on the season).
In game two, the Cowboys blasted five home runs – three coming from
Carlos Ramirez – while
Kalen Hammer and
Carl Shonrock combined to give up just an unearned run to win 17-1.
Ramirez finished 3-for-4 with three homers, seven RBI and four runs to pace the Cowboys.
Cody Reilly went 4-for-5 with a home run, double and three RBI, DeHoog went 2-for-5 with a home run, double and three RBI while Francis and Carlos Reyna also added two hits apiece.
Hammer picked up the win, going five innings and giving up one unearned on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Shonrock pitched two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while striking out three.
NMHU closes out the series with Adams State and its season noon Saturday in Alamosa.
