Game Recap: Baseball | | Justin Bustos

Cowboys lose two heart-breakers against the Orediggers

Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team lost both games of a double-header against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1 RECAP: Kalen Hammer did all he could on the mound for the Cowboys as he faced 26 batters with 8 strikeouts while giving up 5 hits and all 2 runs for the Orediggers, but the Cowboys seemed to struggle defensively as both runs for the Orediggers came off Cowboy mistakes.

The Orediggers first run came as the Orediggers had runners on the corners and attempted to steal second - on the throw to second, the runner would score.

The second run came off a wild pitch from Kalen Hammer in the top half of the 5th inning as Mines would hold the Cowboys to take game 1, 2-0.

Thomas Wisneski, Ashton Roy, Jesus Chavez, Nathan Vetter, and Brandon Baier would all record a hit for the Cowboys while catcher Fabian Ferriera caught his third batter trying to steal in the series.

GAME 2 RECAP: The back-end of the double header was just as close as the last game, as the Cowboys had a chance to win the game with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th.

Mines was able to put together a couple of runs in the 2nd inning, however the Cowboys would come within 1 run in the 6th inning.

Estevan De La O reached on a base on balls while Ashton moved him to third with a blooper to right-center. Jesus Chavez would step in and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score De La O.

Mines was able to add a run in the top of the 7th to take a 3-1 lead over the Cowboys. The Cowboys never gave up as Jared Brown walked with 1 out before Brandon Baier would step in with 2 outs and hit a double down the left field line to move Brown to third.

Tywon Mackey Jr. would step in for the Cowboys with the tying run in scoring position. Mackey Jr. would crush a foul ball over the fence that would have potentially won the game for the Cowboys, however, would ground out to second base and Mines would survive with a 3-1 win.

JT Mossberg pitched 4.2 innings before being pulled after not feeling well after facing 22 batters and giving up 5 hits and 2 runs while walking two batters and striking out six. Jadrian Martinez stepped in to relieve Mossberg as he faced 10 batters and gave up 3 hits and 1 run while striking out three batters.

The Cowboys will continue the series with the final game scheduled for 12 pm on Sunday afternoon at Brandt Field in Las Vegas, NM.
