LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team climbed into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot with a game to go after defeating Western Colorado 3-1 (25-10, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22) Friday at Wilson Complex.
The victory moves the Cowgirls to 6-11 in RMAC play, tied with South Dakota Mines, Adams State and Fort Lewis with a game to go. NMHUÂ takes on Fort Lewis on Saturday and would clinch a spot with a win and losses by Adams State (which plays Western Colorado) and South Dakota Mines (which plays Colorado School of Mines). If it goes to head-to-head with any other schools, NMHU split two five-set matches with SDM and Adams State (the Cowgirls and Skyhawks can't tie since they play each other).
As for Friday, the Cowgirls (10-17 overall, 6-11 RMAC) dominated the Mountaineers (13-12, 8-9) in the opening set 25-10 to get rolling before taking the second game 25-22. After dropping the third game 25-18 to WCU, NMHU came back to defeat the Mountaineers 25-22 to win the match.
Stacy Johnson and Angellina Oliver led the Cowgirls with 11 kills apiece while
Lisi Langi and
Terayah Stukes each had eight.
Soleil Gandara had a 6eam-best 39 assists.
Elena Rivera led NMHU with 19 digs while Gandara added 16 digs.
The Cowgirls host Fort Lewis 3 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Complex for NMHU's senior day.
