Cowgirls drop a pair of games to MSU Denver on Friday afternoon

Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped a pair of RMAC games to MSU Denver on Friday afternoon.

The Cowgirls battled to a 6-4 deficit before MSU Denver scored 8 runs in the top of the seventh inning of game one to go on and win 14-4.

The Roadrunners scored four runs in their first two at-bats before the Cowgirls scored their first run of the afternoon. Carlee Gonzalez (Fr; Rocklin, CA) opened with a lead-off double to right field as Taylor Fish (Fr: Wildomar, CA) singled up the middle to move Gonzalez to third. Samantha Gamboa (Fr; Albuquerque, NM) struck out before Paige Varni (Fr: Clovis, CA) scored Gonzalez with a sacrifice bunt, to cut the lead to 4-1.

The Roadrunners added a run in the third to take a 5-1 advantage after three and a half innings. Tamia Yellowman (Fr; Phoenix, AZ) got the Cowgirls started with a lead-off single through the right side before a bunt from Brooklynn DeLozier (Sr; Longmont, CO) caused MSU Denver pitcher Darby McGhee to over-throw the toss to first, to score Yellowman and make it a 5-2 ballgame.

Camrynn Ziegler (Jr; El paso, TX) stepped in to single as Megan Gutierrez (Fr; Whitier, CA) blasted a shot down the left field line to score Ziegler. Gonzalez stepped in and cut the lead to one run with a triple again down the left field line.

MSU Denver shortstop Mackenzie Jamieson gave the Roadrunners a 6-4 advantage with a homerun over left field in the sixth inning before using eight runs in the top of the seventh to go on and win game one 14-4.

The Cowgirls finished game one with 8 hits and two errors as Carlee Gonzalez led the team with two hits and an RBI.

Nathalie Blattmann (So, Abottsville, Canada) is now 2-6 on the season after giving up eleven runs off twelve hits while striking out one.

MSU Denver Kayla Banks held the Cowgirls scoreless through five innings as the Roadrunners found themselves ahead 8-0 in game two.

The Cowgirls showed signs of life as a fielding error by MSU Denver Jamieson before Gutierrez hit a slow roller down the third base line to move Savannah Pineda Chavez to second. A sacrifice fly from Gonzalez advanced both runners a base before Fish smacked a two RBI double down the right field line to score the only runs for the Cowgirls.

The Roadrunners scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take game two of the double-header, 10-2.

The Cowgirls were held to six total hits, leaving five runners on base. Chavez led the Cowgirls with 2 hits while Fish had a team high 2 RBI on the game.

Varni moves to 2-4 on the season after giving up ten runs of nineteen hits while striking out two Roadrunners.

The Cowgirls and Roadrunners will finish off the four-game series with a double header scheduled to start at 11 am tomorrow morning. Live stream and live stats will be available here.
