Cowgirls drop two heart-breakers in extra innings to Chadron State

Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped two heart-breakers in extra innings to Chadron State to close out the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at the HU Softball Field.

The Cowgirls jumped out early as Brooklynn DeLozier (Sr; Longmont, CO) singled to left field and stole second as Carlee Gonzalez (Fr; Rocklin, CA) scored DeLozier with a double down the left field line.

The Eagles tied the game at 1 in the top of the second inning before Samantha Gamboa (Fr; Albuquerque, NM) gave the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a hard hit shot to center field.

The Eagles turned a three walks and three base hits in the top of the sixth inning into three runs to take a 4-2 lead before DeLozier smacked a two-out 2-run home run over left center field to tie the game at 4-4 and send it to extra innings.

After Chadron State Bailey Marvel double to left center to lead off the top of the ninth inning, Nathalie Blattmann (So; Abbottsville, Canada) came in to pitch for the Cowgirls and registered two outs in a hurry, which included a strikeout. With runners on second and third, Tamia Yellowman (Fr; Phoenix, AZ) mishandled a routine pop-up that gave the Eagles their only unearned run of the game and an eventual 5-4 win.

DeLozier led the Cowgirls with three hits and two RBI while Gonzalez added two hits and an RBI, as well. Samantha Gamboa turns to 0-3 on the season after giving up five runs off eight hits and three strikeouts in 7.2 innings.

Game two of the double-header was a pitching affair as both teams were held scoreless for the first seven innings of play. Blattmann held the Eagles to seven hits and four strikeouts in that time span before the Eagles registered five hits and four runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Yellowman added her second hit of the game for the Cowgirls in the bottom of the fourth as the Eagles held on for a 4-0 win.

The Cowgirls will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Grand Junction, CO to take on Colorado Mesa.

GO COWGIRLS!!
