Cowboys score 19 runs to take game one against Adams State

Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team came out energy in a game that was delayed due to lightning, twice, to beat Adams State in game one of the four-game series 19-5 at Brandt Field on Friday afternoon.

After holding the Grizzlies scoreless in the top of the first inning, Estevan De La O got the ball rolling for the Cowboys with a lead-off single through the left side as Kalen Hammer followed with a double through the right side to move De La O to third. The Cowboys then used a throwing error by ASU third baseman Cedrick Hamilton to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Cowboys then scored five runs off four hits and a walk in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 6-0 but, the Grizzlies responded with four runs in the top half of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 6-4.

The Cowboys, however, didn't let up as they answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run home run from Joe Kuhn and a triple from Gaylan Young that gave the Cowboys a 10-4 advantage before the first lightning delay.

A run apiece from the Grizzlies and the Cowboys in the fifth inning made it 11-5 before the Cowboys rallied for eight runs in the final two innings to go on and take game one, 19-5.

Kalen Hammer led the way with four hits and five RBI while De La O, Young, Kuhn (4 RBI), and Ashton Roy registered three hits each. Young received the start on the mound for the Cowboys after throwing for six innings and giving up five runs off eight hits and six strikeouts while Brady Salyards stepped in as a reliever to register zero Grizzly hits and three strikeouts.

The series was normally scheduled for two double-headers on both Friday and Saturday, however, has changed to a normal 1-2-1 weekend, with a double-header scheduled for 12 pm tomorrow followed by a nine-inning affair on Sunday starting at 1 pm.
