ALBUQUERQUE ---Â More than a month after opening the indoor season with a record-setting performance at the Western Colorado Open, New Mexico Highlands women's track and field was back in action Saturday at the Martin Luther King Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico.
Field events took center stage for the Cowgirls at UNM meet. In a field loaded with DI programs,
Chisom Obioha (long jump), Katy Scott (weight throw) and
Alissa Martinez (shot put) each made the finals in their event.
"This was a tough meet. Six or seven DI teams plus some nationally ranked DII and junior college squads," noted HU head coach
Bob DeVries, "Making the finals was a big deal."
Obioha improved her collegiate best in the long jump to 5.77m (18-11) an NCAA qualifying mark that moved the freshman into the top 15 jumpers in the nation. Fellow frosh Martinez came up with her best throw of the day on her final attempt in the preliminary round, a 12.57m (41'-3") that pushed her into the final.
Scott did not match her season-opening PR, but her 16.05m (52'-8") was enough to put her in the final against seven DI throwers. Scott is currently among the top 20 in the nation in the weight throw.
"We got a good idea of how much we did, or didn't do, over break. Now we have to focus on getting ready for the RMAC championships in five weeks," added DeVries.
The Cowgirls are back on the road next weekend for the Colorado Running Company Mountain Lion Open hosted by UCCS.
