LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team used a huge second-half surge to upend Adams State 88-59 Tuesday night at Wilson Complex for the Cowboys' seventh win in a row.
The win moves NMHU (13-11 overall) into the eighth place in the RMAC standings at 8-10 with four games left - the final spot into the tournament if it were to start today. The Cowboys sit a game ahead of Adams State, CSU Pueblo and Westminster while they are two games back of the No. 7 spot (MSU Denver).
After holding a 37-33 lead on the Grizzlies (11-13 overall) at the half, NMHU nearly doubled up ASU in the second half - outscoring the Grizzlies 51-26 in the second half. The Cowboys shot 56.3 percent in the second half while holding ASU to 30.3 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Sammy Barnes-Thompkins - named the RMACÂ Offensive Player of the Week on Monday - continued his hot streak, scoring 30 points while adding six assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Desmond Carpenter scored 22 points and added four assists, four rebounds and four steals while
Marcus Brown had 13 points and six rebounds.
NMHU hits the road later this week playing at MSU Denver on Friday and at Colorado Christian on Saturday.
