Cowboy baseball drops two to Wayland Baptist

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Wayland Baptist 10-8 and 15-7 on Saturday at Brandt Baseball Field.

In the first game, the Cowboys (1-8) held an 8-6 lead heading into the sixth inning before the Pioneers (8-2) scored four runs in the frame - including a go-ahead three-run homer to make it 10-8.

Estevan De La O went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two stolen bases and a run for NMHU while Aidan McNichol went 3-for-4 with with a double, two RBI and a run as the duo accounted for six of the team's eight hits. Jared Brown added two RBI as well for NMHU.

Dominick Castillo picked up the loss, going 1.1 innings and giving up one hit with one run and one strikeout. Jadrian Martinez gog the start and gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Kalen Hammer went three innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits with three strikeouts.

In the second game, WBU used a nine-run fourth inning to pull away what was a 2-2 contest.

McNichol went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, Brand Baier went 2-for3 with two RBI and a run and Eric Papas went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Cobe Lehman went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI as well.

Angel Castillo got the start and the loss, going 3.2 innings and giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

The teams close out the series noon Saturday at Brandt Baseball Field.
