LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- Three New Mexico Highlands pitchers combined to give up just one run as the Cowboys defeated Wayland Baptist 3-1 in the series finale to split the four-game series with the Pioneers.
Gavin Gifford got the start and gave up a run on three hits with a strikeout and three walks in two innings of work,
Hunter Vancurler picked up the win after going 4.1 scoreless innings and giving up two hits with three strikeouts and walk and
Eston Storm got the save - going the final 2.2 innings and giving up just one hit.
The Cowboys got all the runs they would need in the second when
Allan Salas walked and
Cobe Lehman doubled to put runners on second and third before
Nathan Vetter hit an RBI single and Salas scored on the play on an error to make it 2-0.
WBU cut the lead in half in the top of the third at 2-1, but the score remained that way until the eighth when NMHU got an insurance run on an RBI triple from
Estevan De La O.
Vetter went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI for the Cowboys,
Joe Kuhn went 2-for-4, Salas went 2-for-3 with a run and De La O went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
NMHU travels to take on Lubbock Christian starting Friday.
