LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team split a doubleheader with Black Hills State on Sunday, winning the first game 8-6 and dropping the second contest 14-3.
In the first game, NMHUÂ (4-8 overall, 2-2 RMAC) trailed 4-0 heading into the fourth inning before cutting the lead in half on a
Heaven Medina two-run homer. In the fifth,
Camrynn Ziegler hit an RBI single and Medina hit an RBI double to tie the game 4-4. The Cowgirls took the lead in the sixth with a four-run inning getting RBI singles from Medina and
Dioni Lincoln before a two-run double by
Arianna Ramirez made it 8-4.
BHSUÂ (2-2, 2-2) added two in the seventh, but NMHU was able to close it out.
Medina finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs while Ziegler,
Samantha Gamboa, Ramirez and Lincoln had two hits apiece.
Nathalie Blattmann got the win, giving up six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts and three walks to move to 4-0 on the season.
The victory was coach
Kevin Jannusch's 300th of his career.
In game two, BHSUÂ used a nine-run first inning to leap out to a big lead that the Cowgirls couldn't rally from.Â
Ziegler, Medina and Ramirez each had an RBI for NMHU. Ramirez got the loss, going an inning and giving up nine runs on eight hits with three walks.
The Cowgirls return to action next Saturday starting a four-game series at Regis.
