CANYON, Texas --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team rallied from an early deficit to force extra innings, but fell to CSU Pueblo 18-9 in its season opener Saturday in Texas.
The Cowboys trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth before scoring two runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth - capped by a De La O two-run triple to make it 7-6 NMHU.
The ThunderWolves scored a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to take a 9-7 lead before
Estevan De La O hit an RBI single andÂ
Nathan Vetter scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-9.
But CSU Pueblo scored nine times in the top of the 10th to pull away.
De La O finished 3-for-6 in the game with four RBI,
Brandon Baier went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI,
Eric Papas went 2-for-4 with two doubles an an RBI and
Joe Kuhn finished 2-for-5.
J. Slape picked up the loss, going 1.1 innings and giving up five runs (three earned) on one hit with two walks and two hit batters.
The Cowboys return to action Sunday when they take on West Texas A&M.
