ALBUQUERQUE --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team went 2-2 over its season-opening weekend in Albuquerque.
The Cowgirls defeated UTPB 11-10 on Saturday and Western New Mexico 9-7 on Sunday while losing to Eastern New Mexico twice - 9-3 on Saturday and 9-1 on Sunday.
In the victory over UTPB, NNMHU scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 10-10 before scoring on a Falcons error in the bottom of the 11th to win the game.
Arianna Ramirez went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBi while
Heaven Medina went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run and
Samantha Gamboa went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs.
In the win over Western New Mexico on Sunday, NMHU agained rallied after falling behind 7-0 - scoring nine unanswered runs, including two in the seventh, to pick up the win.
Carlee Gonzalez hit a pinch-hit, two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the win for the Cowgirls.
Camrynn Ziegler finished 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs,
Anahi Ruiz went 2-for-3 with an RBI,
Arianna Ramirez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and
Megan Gutierrez was 2-for-4 with a run. In the circle,
Nathalie Blattmann was stellar in relief, going 5.1 innings and giving up no runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
NMHU returns to action Feb. 18 at the Angelo State Tournament in San Angelo, Texas.
