Cowgirls drop two to Colorado School of Mines

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Sunday at home to Colorado School of Mines, falling 2-1 and 9-0.

In the first game, the Cowgirls (4-14, 2-8) and Orediggers (3-13, 3-5)  were scoreless heading into the seventh inning before CSM scored a pair of runs in the top  of the seventh to take a 2-0 lead and give NMHU one last chance.

NMHU answered with a two-out RBI single in by Savannah Chavez, but the Cowgirls struck out with the tying run on second base to end the game.

Chavez finished the game 2-for-3 to lead NMHU - accounting for half of the Cowgirls' hits.

Nathalie Blattmann took the tough loss, going the distance and giving up two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

In the second game, CSM scored three runs in the second, two  in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth to run-rule NMHU.

Demi Uffelman had the Cowgirls' lone hit, a double. Uffelman also took the loss, going 2.1 innings and giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout.

The teams conclude the four-game series with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Monday at NMHU Softball Field.
