NMHU baseball splits doubleheader with UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team took the first game of a doubleheader 5-3 over UCCS before dropping the second 15-9 Sunday at Mountain Lion Park.

In the first game, the Cowboys (4-15, 2-5) trailed 2-0 after three innings before a three-run inning by NMHU in the fifth on a three-run homer from Brandon Baier gave the Cowboys a 3-2 lead.

UCCS tied the game in the bottom of the fifth 3-3 before Allan Salas hit a two-run homer to right field in the sixth to make it 5-3 Cowboys.

Jadrian Martinez closed it out from there, finishing his complete game - giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of work.

NMHU finished with five hits with no player accounting for more than one.

In hte second game, the Cowboys led 8-6  heading to the bottom of the sixth powered by hoers from Baier, Jared Brown and Joe Kuhn before a nine-run inning by UCCS gave the Mountain Lions the lead for good.

Baier finished 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI, Kalen Hammer was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Kuhn finished 2-for-4 with a pair of solo homers and Nathan Vetter went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.

Angel Castillo got the loss, going 5.1 innings and giving up 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

The teams conclude the series in Las Vegas noon Monday at Brandt Baseball Field.
