DENVER --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team took the series opener from MSU Denver 12-6 Friday at Assembly Athletic Complex.
The Cowboys (5-16 overall, 3-6 RMAC) used a strong start from
Hunter Waugh and a five-run third inning to take control of the contest. The five-run third was highlighted by a two-run single from
Aidan McNichol and a three-run double by
Allan Salas to make it 8-2 NMHU.
The Cowboys extended the lead to 12-3 in the seventh inning thanks to a two-run homer from
Jared Brown and another two-run homer from
Brandon Baier.
Waugh was stellar for NMHU, going 6.1 innings and giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
McNichol finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs, Baier went 3-for-5 with a homer, two doubles, two RBI and four runs,
Estevan De La O went 3-for-5 and Salas,
Eric Papas and Lubby Marujo each had two hits apiece.
The teams play a doubleheader in Denver starting noon Saturday.
