DENVER --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team lost to MSU Denver 13-2 and 6-4 Saturday at Assembly Athletic Complex.
The Cowgirls (4-20, 2-12) took a 2-0 lead in game one on a
Heaven Medina two-run homer before the Roadrunners (16-11, 6-6) scored 13 unanswered runs over the second, third and fourth innings.
Medina led the Cowgirls at the plate, going 2-for-2.
Nathalie Blattmann picked up the loss, going 2.2 innings and giving up six runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, NMHU again took a 2-0 lead - this time on a
Carlee Gonzalez two-run single before MSU Denver scored three in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2. MSU Denver led 5-2 before Ariana Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the third inning to cut the deficit 5-4. However, that's as close as NMHU got as it lost by two runs.
Savannah Chavez went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs for NMHU while Ramirez finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs and a homer. Ramirez picked up the loss, going six innings and giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and eight walks.
The teams conclude the series with a doubleheader Sunday.
