DENVER --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-4 before taking the second game 9-6 Sunday at Assembly Athletic Complex.
The Cowgirls (5-21) trailed the Roadrunners (17-12, 7-7) 4-0 heading into the fifth inning of the second game before exploding for eight runs thanks to a solo homer from
Megan Gutierrez, a three-run homer by Savannah Chavez to tie it 4-4, a bases-loaded walk to Gutierrez and a
Demi Uffelman three-run double to make it 8-4.
NMHU held off MSU Denver to pick up the win.
Arianna Ramirez finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs while
Heaven Medina went 2-for-4 with a run. Uffelman picked up the win, going three innings and giving up two runs on two hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Nathalie Blattmann picked up the save, going 1.1 scoreless innings and giving up two hits.
In the first game, the Cowgirls trailed 2-0 and tied it and 3-2 and tied it before a three-run fourth inning for the Roadrunners helped them pull away.
Camrynn Ziegler went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a run while Medina went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Blattmann got the loss, going 3.2 innings and giving up six runs on seven hits with a strikeout and three walks.
NMHU returns to action Saturday on the road at Chadron State.
