Cowgirls split doubleheader on the road at Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team split its series opening doubleheader with Chadron State - winning the first game 5-2 and dropping the second 6-2 on Saturday at CSC Softball Field.

In the first game, the Cowgirls (6-22, 4-14) trailed 2-1 heading into the seventh and final inning before a pair of Eagle (5-26, 4-14) errors led to four runs for NMHU to take a 5-2 lead.

Nathalie Blattmann did the ret in the seventh, closing out the complete game victory - giving up two runs on five hits with seven strikeout and no walks. At the plate, Camrynn Ziegler went 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base while Arianna Ramirez finished with four RBI and Megan Gutierrez had two hits.

In the second game, NMHU fell behind 2-0 in the first before cutting it to 2-1 on a Ramirez RBI groundout in the fourth inning. But CSC scored four runs in the bottom of the inning and held on against the Cowgirls.

NMHU had only five hits in the second game with no player having more than one with Mickey Sibley adding an RBI double in the seventh (she also had a stolen base). Ramirez got the loss in the circle, going 5.1 innings and giving up four runs on eight hits with two walks.

The teams meet again for a doubleheader starting noon Sunday.
