CHADRON, Neb. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team split a doubleheader with Chadron State on Sunday, winning the first game 9-8 and dropping the second 3-2 at CSC Softball Field to split the series with the Eagles.
The Cowgirls (7-23, 5-15) rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the first game and used a
Camrynn Ziegler RBI in the seventh to score
Alice Midiri win the game, 9-8.
Ziegler led the Cowgirls at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double, four RBI and two stolen bases.
Samantha Gamboa went 2-for-4 with an RBI,
Gloria DiLauro was 2-for-4 with two run and an RBI and
Mickey Sibley finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Arianna Ramirez got the win in relief, giving up four runs (none earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks in four innings of relief.
In the second game, the Cowgirls trailed CSC (6-26, 5-15) 2-0 heading into the sixth inning when Ramirez ripped an RBI single and Sibley smacked a sacrifice fly to tie it 2-2. However, the Eagles scored in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead and held NMHU scoreless in the seventh.
The Cowgirls had six hits in the game - one from six different players.
Nathalie Blattmann took the tough loss - going the distance and giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
NMHU returns to action Saturday when it hosts Colorado Mesa starting at noon.
