LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team nearly rallied from a six-run deficit in the final inning, but fell just short and lost to Regis 12-11 Friday at Brandt Field.
The Cowboys (5-20 overall, 3-10 RMAC) led Regis 6-3 heading into the seventh inning after a
Joe Kuhn homer in the fifth before the Rangers (15-11-1, 9-4) scored six runs in the seventh, one in the eight and two more in the ninth to take a 12-6 lead heading into the fifth.
NMHUÂ rallied in the final inning with a
Reece Dunn RBI single, a
Mason Wood RBI fielder's choice, an Estevan De Lo O RBI single and a
Jared Brown two-run double to make it 12-11 before falling just short to Regis.
Brandon Baier went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run while De La O, Brown, Kuhn, Lubby Marujo and Dunn had two hits apiece.
Hunter Vancurler got the loss, going an inning and giving up six runs on five hits.
Hunter Waugh had another strong start for the Cowboys, going five innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits with a strikeout and a walk.
The two teams meet again in a doubleheader starting noon Saturday at Brandt Field.
