Cowboys pound out 36 runs in doubleheader sweep of Regis

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team pounded out 37 hits and 36 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Regis - beating the Rangers 19-9 and 17-5 Saturday at Brandt Field.

In the first game, the Cowboys (7-20, 5-10) used a 12-run fifth inning to turn a 8-7 deficit into a 19-8 lead and held on for the 10-run win.

Brandon Baier went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, seven RBI and three runs in the contest. Joe Kuhn, Aidan McNichol and Jared Brown each homered as well for the Cowboys in the victory. Estevan De La O, Kuhn, McNichol, Allan Salas, Nathan Vetter and Jose Ayala had two hits apiece as well.

Jadrian Martinez got the win, giving up eight runs (seven earned) in five innings on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

In the second game, the Cowboys scored five runs in the first, four in the second, third and sixth innings to beat the Rangers 17-5. Jared Brown finished 3-for-4 with a double, triple, six RBI and four runs, Kuhn went 3-for-4 with a homer, a triple and four RBI, McNichol went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI, De La O went 3-for-4 with a double, four runs and an RBI and Lubby Marujo went 3-for-4 with three runs.

Angel Castillo picked up the complete game win, going seven innings and giving up five runs  on 10 hits with a strikeout and a walk.

The teams conclude the series with a nine-inning game tarting noon Sunday at Brantdt
