Cowboys drop doubleheader to Colorado Christian on Saturday

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Colorado Christian, 8-7 and 9-2, Saturday at Brandt Field.

The Cowboys (3-12 overall, 1-2 RMAC) led 3-0 early in the first game thanks to a two-run double by Reece Dunn in the second and a RBI groundout by Jared Brown in the third.

Colorado Christian (4-11, 1-2) scored five unanswered runs over the next two innings and led 7-6 heading into the seventh inning. But the Cowboys forced extra innings thanks to an RBI single from Joe Kuhn to tie it up 7-7.

But the Cougars scored a run in the eighth inning and NMHU couldn't answer and suffered the loss.

Lubby Marujo paced NMHU at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Estevan De La O, Brown, Aidan McNichol and Allan Salas had two hits apiece as well.

Hunter Vancurler picked up the loss, going 2.1 innings and giving up a run on three hits with a strikeout and a walk. Jadrian Martinez got the start, going 5.2 innings and giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, the Cowboys trailed 3-0 heading into the fourth before a Brandon Baier RBI double and a McNichol RBI single cut the CCU lead to one. But five unansered runs by the Cougars help them pull away.

Baier was the only Cowboy with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Angel Castillo picked up the loss, going six innings and giving up six runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

The series concludes noon Sunday in Las Vegas.
