LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped a pair of games at home to Fort Lewis, 7-2 and 14-4, on Sunday at NMHU Softball Field.
The Cowgirls (7-31, 5-23) led the Skyhawks (12-25, 12-16) 2-0 in game one after four innings thanks to an RBI triple by
Megan Gutierrez and an RBI double from
Carlee Gonzalez - both in the fourth.
But FLC scored three in the fifth and four more in the seventh to pull away for the win.
Gutierrez had two of NMHU's four hits, going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, run and RBI.
Nathalie Blattmann took the loss, going 4.2 innings and giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
In game two, FLC scored three in the first and never trailed again to come away with the 14-4 win.
Samantha Gamboa went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run for the Cowgirls while
Dioni Lincoln hit a solo home run. Blattmann got the loss, going 1.1 innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits with no strikeouts and two walks.
The Cowgirls return to action for a non-conference midweek matchup against Eastern New Mexico in Portales starting 1 p.m. Wednesday.
