Cowgirl softball drops two one-run games at UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team lost a pair of one-run contests Friday 2-1 and 6-5 against UCCS at Mountain Lion Field.

In the first game, the Cowgirls (7-39, 5-29) took a 1-0 lead on the Mountain Lions (21-21, 19-15) on a Heaven Medina RBI single to left to score Savannah Pineda-Chavez. The score remained that way until the sixth when a UCCS homer tied the game before the Mountain Lions took the lead later in the inning on a fielder's choice.

NMHU couldn't answer in the seventh and fell to the Mountain Lions. The Cowgirls finished with three hits in the game, Medina, Pineda-Chavez and Arianna Ramirez (all singles).

Nathalie Blattmann took the tough loss, going six innings and giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

In the second game, the Cowgirls and UCCS were tied 1-1 heading into the fifth when a three-run fifth inning for NMHU highlighted by a Samantha Gamboa two-run triple gave it the lead.

However, a four-run sixth for UCCS gave the Mountain Lions a 5-4 lead before a Medina game-tying RBI single to center tied it 5-5 heading to the bottom of hte seventh. But UCCS walked it off with an RBI double.

Gamboa finished th game 2-for-4 with with three RBI and a run while Camrynn Ziegler went 2-for-3 with a game-high three runs. Arianna Ramirez got the loss, going 5.2 innings and giving up five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and seven walks.

The teams play another doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
